The Bubble Algorithms Built

It seems that since that since the news became easily accessible via the internet, public interest and involvement has rapidly increased. Now it's not a new phenomenon for certain outlets to have obvious political leanings, but it seems bipartisanship is more pronounced than ever. I believe that some of the blame belongs to online algorithms for many different sites or services that tailor the news you see for your own personal tastes. The algorithms are based on previous consumption. I think that this, by and large, insulates you from exposure to ideas or perspectives that run contrary to the ones you are commonly exposed to. I think that this lack of exposure widens the divide between the left and the right. Perhaps by having your idea's or perspectives challenged by differing opinions, you become able to see the flaws therein. Citizen Journalism and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Mass Shooting

Although modern journalists are capable of promptly responding to breaking news, cell phones allow regular citizens to capture live video/audio of newsworthy events as they unfold. Citizen journalism has allowed people around the world insight into issues and scenarios in a raw unedited form. When utilized well it has given momentum to movements, brought about cultural awareness and provided a wider field of vision to the fourth estate. On Feb 14, 2018, citizen journalism offered us a glimpse inside the horror of a school shooting. Shortly before classes let out, a previously expelled student entered the premises and pulled the fire alarm, causing the hallways to fill with fleeing students. He then proceeded to unload clip after clip of ammunition from his AR-15 assault rifle. By the time the killing had ended, 17 students had lost their lives, and 16 more were injured. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend.

With the internet and social media allowing journalists to instantly publish articles, updates, tweets and posts, it's never been easier for a journalist to report in a timely manner while still on location. With the ability to be immediate, comes the race to be first.          There are many examples of how the race to be first can lead to a lapse in the application of journalistic rigour. Respected media outlets have time and time again shot themselves in the foot by reporting stories that have not been properly vetted. There is more to be aware of than just errors in reporting.
